EXCELerate Your COMPSTAT

The presentation will provide an overview of how analysts can automate crime statistics using only MS Access and Excel. Attendees will learn the basics of pulling data using SQL, creating engaging and dynamic visualizations in Excel, and fully automating the process using macros and Excel formulas. Using a simulated database, attendees will have the chance to walk through the process of establishing an outside connection to a RMS, writing a simple query, and refreshing the reports. Attendees will leave with Excel templates they can take to their home departments and the skills necessary to adapt them to unique databases.

Amanda K. Bruner works in CNA’s Center for Justice Research Innovation as a crime analysis advisor primarily supporting the Crime Analyst in Residence (CAR) Program, a national training and technical assistance initiative sponsored by the Bureau of Justice Assistance.
